ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)
ALS develops from aggravated vata (air) causing degeneration of majja dhatu (nervous tissue) and loss of muscular support.
Western Understanding
A progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
Ayurvedic Understanding
ALS (Mamsa Kshaya with Majja Dhatu Dushti) in Ayurveda is a severe majja dhatu (nervous tissue) and mamsa dhatu (muscle tissue) disorder caused by extreme vata aggravation. It develops when vata (air) causes progressive degeneration of nervous tissue and muscle wasting, leading to loss of motor function. The condition is characterized by progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventual paralysis. Treatment focuses on nourishing majja and mamsa dhatu with medicated oils and ghee, pacifying vata through warm oil massages, using neuroprotective rasayana herbs like ashwagandha and bala, and maintaining ojas (vital essence). Supportive care includes gentle movement, proper nutrition, and emotional support.
