Asthma
Asthma arises from kapha (mucus, heaviness) blocking the respiratory channels with vata (air) aggravation disturbing prana (life-force) flow.
Western Understanding
A condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus.
Ayurvedic Understanding
Asthma (Tamaka Shwasa) in Ayurveda is a pranavaha srotas (respiratory channel) disorder caused by kapha dosha accumulation blocking the airways combined with vata aggravation. It develops when kapha (mucus) accumulates in the lungs and respiratory passages, obstructing prana (life-force) flow. The condition is characterized by difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing. Treatment focuses on expelling kapha through expectorant herbs like vasa, kantakari, and pippali, strengthening agni to prevent ama formation, and pacifying vata through regular breathing exercises (pranayama). Dietary modifications include avoiding cold, heavy, and mucus-forming foods, and favoring warm, light, and easily digestible meals.
