Arthritis
Arthritis stems from vata aggravation (dryness and movement) in the joints, leading to pain and ama (toxins) accumulation causing inflammation.
Western Understanding
Inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain and stiffness that can worsen with age.
Ayurvedic Understanding
Arthritis (Amavata or Sandhivata) in Ayurveda is a condition where vata dosha vitiates the joints (sandhis) combined with ama (toxins) accumulation. It develops when weak agni (digestive fire) produces ama that travels through the body and lodges in joints, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation. The condition is classified into three types: Vataja (dry, cracking joints), Pittaja (hot, red, swollen joints), and Kaphaja (heavy, stiff joints with fluid accumulation). Treatment focuses on eliminating ama through fasting and light diet, pacifying vata with warm oil massages, and using anti-inflammatory herbs like guggulu, turmeric, and ashwagandha. Regular gentle exercise and maintaining warmth are essential.
