Chronic Kidney Disease
Kidney disease is caused by vata (air) and kapha (earth-water) aggravation obstructing mutravaha srotas (urinary channels) with accumulated ama (toxins).
Western Understanding
A condition in which the kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood as well as they should.
Ayurvedic Understanding
Chronic kidney disease (Vrikka Roga) in Ayurveda is a mutravaha srotas (urinary channel) disorder caused by vata and kapha aggravation affecting the kidneys (vrikka). It develops when ama (toxins) accumulates in the urinary channels, obstructing proper filtration and elimination. The condition progresses through stages of impaired kidney function, fluid retention, and eventually kidney failure. Treatment focuses on eliminating ama through light diet and herbs, strengthening agni to prevent further toxin accumulation, pacifying vata and kapha, and using kidney-supportive herbs like punarnava, gokshura, and varuna. Maintaining proper hydration and avoiding excessive salt and protein are essential.
