Depression

Depression is rooted in vata imbalance (air element) in the nervous system combined with kapha stagnation (heaviness) and impaired prana flow (life-force energy).

Western Understanding

A mood disorder causing a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.

Ayurvedic Understanding

Depression (Vishada) in Ayurveda is primarily a manasika roga (mental disorder) affecting sattva guna (clarity) and causing imbalance in manovaha srotas (mental channels). It develops when vata dosha vitiates majja dhatu (nervous tissue) and ojas (vital essence), leading to depletion of mental energy. The condition is classified into three types: Vataja (anxiety, restlessness), Pittaja (anger, irritability), and Kaphaja (lethargy, heaviness). Treatment focuses on nourishing majja dhatu, strengthening ojas, and balancing the gunas through meditation, pranayama, herbal therapies, and sattvic lifestyle.
